Yours?

The one emotion that brought me to New York City, the one emotion that I must feel throughout my life:

HOPE.

What emotion must y’all have to keep going? More to the point, if hope is gone, what is its substitute?

I’m with you. I have to have hope. Whether it’s big or small, having hope keeps me focused on the task at hand…

In the absence of hope, I think it’s just sheer determination that can get me through…

  2. 2 lunaliar Says:

Hope can be easily substituted by a good cup of coffee and a newspaper. Once I read how terrible everyone else is doing, it’s easier to scrape up some pride.

But without hope, I’d have to say that true grit is what keeps me going. The fact that I know of nothing that can conquer my spirit.

  3. 3 Spicy Law Girl Says:

just sheer drive. Even though I keep on getting knocked down…I know no matter what happens, I’m not going to stop trying.

  4. 4 Okie Says:

I need something to look forward to. Anticipation.

  5. 5 Jia Li Says:

    Hope and Happyness.

  6. 6 Leigh Says:

Tenacity; sheer will to survive…and possibly Haagen Daz coffee ice cream.

  7. 7 Sarah Says:

Without hope, what is there really?

  8. 8 Jake Says:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

For me it is faith. Hope and faith are pretzeled together in this seemingly oh-so-foreign life where our deepest desires are never quite quenched. The fact that we have such haunting passions allures us to the mysterious “hope” that surely there is more. For every single desire that we have on this earth there is always an object for that desire, whether something as simple as hunger there is food, or something as complex as love there is… well- love. Ultimately our desires lead us to an infinite life where we can be understood, and understand, where we can have meaning and significance, where we can be caught up in a never ending adventure, and experience the depths of love in our relationships that we have merely heard whispers of. Faith swims where reason cannot wade.

I have always had a hard time with hope.
I’ve hoped into voids sometimes, and the realization that not will come of it has left me very jaded.

Instead, I just put my head down and grit my teeth and take pleasure in the immediate beauty around me.

    It seems to suffice.

    FEAR!

  11. 11 Kern Says:

Without hope, I suppose one could go for absolute resignation.

  12. 12 rita montfork Says:

curiosity? i guess so, at least it makes for a reasonable ending…

  13. 13 Parveneh Says:

Obligation/Duty. If you have individuals dependent on you for suvival, even without hope for yourself and your life, the duty you have to others should keep you going.

  14. 14 lorie Says:

To your second question, I believe the absence of hope is despair. What people substitute for it depends on the individual (and their own particular vice or issue!). Fear, pride, greed– they all serve to “keep people going”– but to what end?

Contentment. Now THAT’S one that’s not been brought up yet…

  15. 15 Aloke Kumar Says:

    Love

  16. 16 Orleans Says:

    As a southern girl…..I say…
“always keep yall line a cast…in the stream where you least expect it….there will be a fish!”
    Hope..in the simple terms…

  17. 17 white Says:

    Agree with Jake: faith,
that no matter how bad things are right now, life will just go on..

..and: determination to survive it all. Ain’t you just want to survive the battle, even if you won’t come out a winner..

  18. 18 Sylvie Says:

belief…you gotta believe in something. which is kinda like hope. great blog by the way.

  19. 19 uruwashii Says:

substitute for hope is hope that hope will be restored,in other words, hope

  20. 20 J. Says:

My rage is what propels me.

  21. 21 Jada's Gigi Says:

Faith, hope, and love go hand in hand for they are the divine ones. May I never be driven by any other

  22. 22 thinking girl Says:

when I feel that I have no more hope, my feet hit the ground and I go. What propels me? my desire for knowledge, my curiosity, my sense of adventure, and a deep need for stimulation and challenge.

substitute for hope: faith. if you can’t hope, at least believe.
substitute for faith: love. if you don’t have faith, show someone love.
substitute for love: charity. if you don’t have love, show someone charity.

that’s what this thinking girl thinks!

  23. 23 cluft Says:

Survival instinct plus an Old World upbringing (we lived through World Wars, so don’t complain) and a dose of shame.

All told, though, hope certainly helps ease the pain.

  24. 24 deadpuppy Says:

    hope
as in i will stop breathing someday

  25. 25 HoustonBoy Says:

I’m not sure if you mean hope for finding love or for finding/living your dream. If either of those were to be lost, then I would live in freedom.

If hope is gone, then freedom is my substitute.

To live my life playing guitar, traveling to other parts of the world (which I do), feeding my spirit, painting, writing, visiting and spending time with great friends, appreciating and being grateful for my life and simply being here.

Losing a brother to cancer at the young age of thirty (15 years ago, now) awakens those synapses to be more aware of how fortunate we really are.

Doing what I want, when I want, with whomever and wherever I want…

Freedom. That would be my substitute, Belle.

  26. 26 WaRaRaX© Says:

    ILUSIÓN.
    (illusion)

  27. 27 amydell Says:

Persistance– without it- you dont usually find hope, love and faith.

  28. 28 Gibber Says:

Okie, good call on anticipation. I think it’s just a more confident version of hope. It’s like you know something good is going to happen and just can’t wait - better than just hoping something good will happen.

  29. 29 Maryam Says:

    Anger.
Anger, really is at the root of all action.
and I don’t mean anger in the gun-toting axe wielding sense but a mild yet pure form of it.
